Course Outline

It is illegal to transport a firearm in a vehicle on a public highway in Iowa, unless it is unloaded and in a securely fastened case.

  • Here are some requirements for specific firearms.
    • You must transport handguns unloaded in a closed container or a securely wrapped package. The container or package must be too large to conceal on your body and must not be readily accessible to anyone in the vehicle.
    • Muzzleloaders must be transported in a case. They are considered unloaded if the cap is removed from the nipple, or the priming charge is removed from the pan.
  • Some exceptions to these requirements may be permitted by Iowa law.
